           “Revelation 10

New King James Version

The Mighty Angel with the Little Book

10 I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars. When he cried out, seven thunders uttered their voices. Now when the seven thunders [a]uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying [b]to me, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.”

The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised up his [c]hand to heaven and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, that there should be delay no longer, but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

John Eats the Little Book

Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.”

So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.”

And he said to me, “Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

10 Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. 11 And [d]he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

“DISPENSATIONAL INTERPRETATION: The mystery of God would be finished: V. 7 correlates with Dan. 9:24, the finishing of God’s final purpose concerning national Israel and the city of Jerusalem. Even though national Israel is promised deliverance, she must first experience suffering and judgment (see Jer. 15:10; 20:14-18).            “9:24, 26 The time frame of the seventy weeks or “Seventy Sevens of Years” is associated with Daniel’s people, the Jews, and the holy city, Jerusalem. The fact that the weeks of years (490 years) are 360-day years is established by a comparison of 7:25 with Rev. 11:2, 3; 12:6, 14; and 13:5. The weeks of years began with the commandment by Artaxerxes in 445 B.C. to restore Jerusalem. Chronologically, they are divided as:

           Seven sevens                     49 years—445 to 396 B.C.

(From Artaxerxes’ decree to the arrival of Nehemiah and the covenant renewal celebration at Jerusalem)

Sixty-two sevens               434 years—396 B.C. to A.D. 32

(From the dedication of the second temple to the

crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ)

           One seven                         7 years—Unfulfilled. See note on vv. 26, 27.”        (NEW SPIRIT FILLED LIFE Bible—Jack W. Hayford, Litt.D.—New King James Version—THOMAS NELSON—Since 1798)

“9:26, 27 One who makes desolate: National Israel will enter into a covenant with the future little horn, the Roman prince (7:8; 11:36) or Antichrist for seven years (Daniel’s final or Seventieth Week). In the middle of the week, the Antichrist will break the covenant and demand that the blood sacrifices, restored by Israel in the last days, must cease. He will then set up his image in the Jewish temple and require worship (Matt. 24:15; 2 Thess. 2:3, 4).

CLASSICAL INTERPRETATION: The classical approach to 9:24-27 differs, seeing such numerical computation as arbitrary. It views the 490 as representing not a literal period but a lifetime punishment seven times over (Jer. 25:11; Lev. 26:28). In other words, to this viewpoint, in some form or other Israel’s desolation will last for centuries, the postexilic return not marking that end; but an end will come.

This view also confines this prophecy to the second century B.C., that time when Jerusalem would suffer greatly at the hands of Antiochus Epiphanes (one who makes desolate). His “abominations” included setting up a heathen altar in the temple, the time of the “cutting off” of Onias III, God’s anointed high priest of that time. (“Messiah” [vv. 25, 26], which can be translated “anointed one,” is thus seen by the classical school as not necessarily referring to Christ but to the high priest.) The prophesied consummation is interpreted as Antiochus’s overthrow at the time of the Maccabean revolt.

The classical approach does not, however, rule out antitype fulfilment of the broader principles in Jesus Christ, in the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, nor in the last days rampages of the Antichrist. Daniel’s language is clearly eschatological at points, denoting a multilevel prophetic fulfillment. See note on Obad. 15.”                      (NEW SPIRIT FILLED LIFE Bible—Jack W. Hayford, Litt.D.—New King James Version—THOMAS NELSON—Since 1798)

“15 The word day occurs 11 times in vv. 8-14. Now it becomes the day of the Lord, a season of judgment and divine justice upon all the nations around Israel. The OT looked ever forward to this time.

“The Day of the Lord” is used by the OT prophets to signify a time in the history of mankind when God directly intervenes to bring salvation to His people and punishment to the rebellious. By it God restores His righteous order in the Earth. As noted, the terms “that Day,” or simply “the Day,” are sometimes used as synonyms for the fuller expression “The Day of the Lord.”

The fulfillment of the Day must be seen, however, in four different stages: 1) In the times of the prophets, it was revealed by such events as the invasion of Israel by foreign powers (Amos), the awesome plagues of locusts (Joel), and the return of Israelite exiles from captivity (Ezra-Nehemiah). (2) In that prophetic insight has the quality of merging periods of eschatology so that even the prophets themselves could not always distinguish the various times of the fulfillment of their prophecies, that Day developed into a broad biblical concept. Prophetic fulfillments closest to the prophet’s own day were mingled with those reaching as far as the culmination of all things. Hence, the First Coming of Christ and the church age began another phase of the Day of the Lord. As participants in this aspect of the Day of the Lord, the church can call on the risen Christ to cast down spiritual forces that hinder God’s work in this present world and to bring about innumerable blessings. This is made clear by comparing Is. 61:1, 2 with Luke 4:18, 19, and Joel 2:25-32 with Acts 2:16-21. 3) The Second Coming of Christ will inaugurate the third aspect of the Day of the Lord, during which Christ’s personal, righteous, and universal rule will restore God’s order to the Earth (Is. 11:6-9; Amos 9:13). 4) The ultimate fulfillment of the Day of the Lord awaits the full arrival of the world to come, with its new heaven and new earth. Compare Ezek. 47:1-12 with Rev. 22:1-5.”                   (NEW SPIRIT FILLED LIFE Bible—Jack W. Hayford, Litt.D.—New King James Version—THOMAS NELSON—Since 1798)

Mixed Marriages

When these things were completed, the officials came to me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, but have committed the repulsive acts of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy [a]race has [b]intermingled with the peoples of the lands. Indeed, the officials and chief men have been foremost in this unfaithful act and direct violation [of God’s will].” When I heard this, I tore my clothing and my robe [in grief], I pulled out some of the hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled [at the shame of it]. Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles gathered to me as I sat appalled until the evening offering.

As Newborn Babes

So put aside every trace of malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander and hateful speech; like newborn babies [you should] long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may be nurtured and grow in respect to salvation [its ultimate fulfillment], if in fact you have [already] tasted [a]the goodness and gracious kindness of the Lord.

As Living Stones

Come to Him [the risen Lord] as to a living Stone which men rejected and threw away, but which is choice and precious in the sight of God. You [believers], like living stones, are [b]being built up into a spiritual house for a holy and dedicated priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices [that are] acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a chosen stone, a precious (honored) Cornerstone,
And he who believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] will never be disappointed [in his expectations].”

This precious value, then, is for you who believe [in Him as God’s only Son—the Source of salvation]; but for those who disbelieve,

“The [very] stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief Cornerstone,”

and,

“A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;

for they stumble because they disobey the word [of God], and to this they [who reject Him as Savior] were also appointed.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people [at all], but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
