22 David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was [a]discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.
3 Then David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother come here with you, till I know what God will do for me.” 4 So he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.
5 Now the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go to the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

It is possible Saul had levied a heavy tax upon the inhabitants of Israel, and that many of these victims—in debt and discontented and in distress—decided to join David when they heard that he was in exile. Beloved of YESHUA CHRIST JESUS, this is part of the message I believe our LORD blessed me with delivering to these United States of America back when Obama was up for re-election but unfortunately, this country was stiff-necked and rejected GOD Most High, and the words the LORD my GOD blessed me with delivering has come to pass, and is still producing rotten fruit: just one example is that your children have been and are still being taken, being mutilated, sex trafficked, and murdered: yet this country still have not humbled itself and turned back to the GOD of the Bible. However, when war comes, it will cry out to the LORD, but GOD may very well say, again;
“18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”
